The tent and RV sites have paved parking aprons. Cooking supplies and bedding are not provided. Interior furnishings include a futon and bunk beds with mattresses. The yurts sit on a wooden platform and have an electric light and space heater, but no additional electric plug-ins. It's a popular campground and tends to fill quickly.Įach yurt provides a cabin-like space for a family of five or six people. Fallen Leaf Lake is less crowded and not as well-known as Lake Tahoe, making this a great base camp for exploring the many sights and recreational activities in the area. The campground is typically open from mid-May through mid-October. The campground features 206 sites that include six yurts and standard tent and RV sites. The south shore of Lake Tahoe is less than a mile away. Turn left down the dirt road and continue to the trailhead parking.Fallen Leaf Campground is situated on the north shore of Fallen Leaf Lake and adjacent to Taylor Creek. Tallac Trailhead sign directly across from the entrance to Baldwin Beach. The trailhead is located approximately 3-1/2 miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89. Beyond Cathedral Lake, the trail becomes steep and strenuous as it continues up the front face of Mount Tallac. The first part of the trail to Floating Island and Cathedral Lakes is easy to moderate and can be enjoyed by the novice hiker. These trails are not designed to be handicapped accessible. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the Sierra mountains bring a jacket, carry lots of water and allow plenty of time for your trip. Providing a spectacular view of Fallen Leaf Lake, Lake Tahoe, and Desolation Wilderness, this strenuous hike is well worth the effort. This permit must be purchased before you get to the Mt. Overnight hikers will need an overnight permit for Desolation Wilderness. Day hikers, pick up your permit at the self serve area at the trailhead. $5 per person for 1st 2 days for overnight permit.Ī wilderness permit is required.
